The Dublin Wheelers celebrated in style yesterday when they held an open race in Dunboyne, Co. Meath. The event was held as part of their celebrations in this the 75th year of existence.

It was also evident that a new generation of 'Wheelers' were overseeing the day. Plus the weather was ideal and despite the distractions of Padraig Harrington and the Dublin footballers in Croke Park all hands were on deck.

Clerk of the course was Ian Gallagher who was ably assisted by Ciaran Farrell and Wes Murphy.

The event was run off on a handicapped basis and when Wes informed Ian of the gaps, the race swung into action.

First off was the ladies who had a three minute gap on the veterans who on the start line looked eager and keen. Next in line was C's and the Juniors and finally the B's who had a deficit of nine minutes to make up on the ladies.

The race went out the Summerhill Road turned right onto the Batterstown/Mullagh circuit. The 90 competitors covered four laps and at the end of the fourth lap they headed back towards Dunboyne with the finish line on the Summerhill Rd.

It was clear as day after lap one that the Veterans where in the ascendancy having reeled in the ladies very quickly. Whereas they were holding their advantage of three minutes on the C's and Juniors. Oft times their advantage went up such was the diligence that they were employing on keeping the lead. It was very noticeable that the ladies were not shy of the company and many a time were observed at the head of the race.

The chasing packs were very eager but the stop tactics of breaking loose was having an adverse effect and was benefiting the leaders.

On the final lap when it looked as though they might be caught Anto Moran of the Ravens CC injected a burst of speed which took him clear and at one time he had gained nearly 30 seconds but on the long straight after Batterstown he was the hare and chasing pack were motivated by his escape.

Any chance of the chasers including Philip Lavery who only the week before was in the thick of the action on behalf of Stena Ireland in the Martin Donnelly Junior Tour was literally blown away because of the injection of speed applied by Anto.

Colm Bracken (Murphy Surveyors)
In the dash for the finishing line Colm Bracken accelerated to get the win on behalf of Murphy Surveyors/Kilcullen CC.

Underage racing was held in conjunction with the main event and full marks to Covey Wheelers and Kanturk Town for supporting the festivities held in honour of the Dublin Wheelers won on yesterday's performance will be around for many more years come.

Olympic bound for the discipline of mountain biking, Robin Seymour bagged his 15th consecutive Irish title yesterday in Kilruddery Estate, Bray, Co. Wicklow. He had some anxious moments on the last of seven laps in the estate when leading by over a minute plus he developed mechanical trouble but he ironed out the problem himself and finished 40 seconds ahead of Conor McConvey with Niall Davies third.
