David McCann finished tenth on stage eight of the Tour of Qinghai Lake in China yesterday, crossing the line one minute and 13 seconds behind Tyler Hamilton (Rock Racing) and Marek Rutkiewicz (Poland).

Hamilton, a former Tour de France stage winner who has been winless since testing positive for an homologous blood transfusion at the 2004 Vuelta a España, jumped across to Rutkiewicz on the descent from the day’s Hors Categorie climb, and then outsprinted him to the line.

He gave credit to an in-form McCann after the stage. "I didn't have the acceleration to go with the Iranians," Hamilton told reporters after the race. "They have proven that they are the strongest climbers in the race. So I just rode my own tempo.

“I stayed with the main bunch and Dave McCann - he is really strong, I take my hat off to him.”

McCann had started the day in an excellent second place second overall, nine seconds behind Hossein Askari (Tabriz Petrochemical Team), but Hamilton and Rutkiewicz have now moved ahead of the duo in the general classification. The Belfast rider is one minute 17 seconds back in fourth overall heading into today’s penultimate stage, a 168.1 kilometre race from Menyuan to Huzhu.

This also features a hors categorie climb near the finish and, with a circuit race finishing things off on Sunday, is likely to determine the shape of the final general classification.

McCann is seventh in the points classification and tenth in the mountains ranking.

Several Pezula Racing riders are also competing in the 2.HC Chinese event. Cameron Jennings (Pezula Racing) was best of these yesterday in 66th place. Ciarán Power, Cameron Jennings, Kieran Page and Martyn Irvine are 76th, 80th, 90th and 94th overall.
