Pezula Racing rider Ciarán Power was a good tenth in the bunch gallop which decided the seventh stage of the Tour of Qinghai Lake in China today, finishing in the same time as the victor Tom Veelers (Skil-Shimano). Stefan Löffler (Giant Asia Racing Team) and Sebastian Siedler (Skil-Shimano) were second and third on the 214 kilometre leg to Xining.

David McCann was next best of the Irish riders in 37th place and remains in an excellent second overall, just nine seconds behind Hossein Askari (Tabriz Petrochemical Team). He is also seventh in the points ranking and tenth in the mountains classification.

Martyn Irvine and his foreign Pezula Racing team-mates Kieran Page and Cameron Jennings also finished in the main bunch.

The 2.HC race continues tomorrow with a 150.8 kilometres race from Xining to Menyuan. The riders will cross a hors categorie climb 42 kilometres from the finish and this is certain to shake things up. McCann will try to take over the race lead, but he and Askari are certain to find themselves under attack from Rock Racing duo Oscar Sevilla and Tyler Hamilton, who are third and fourth overall.

The race concludes on Sunday.

17/7/08 MCCANN SECOND OVERALL IN TOUR OF QINGHAI LAKE

David McCann heads into today’s seventh stage of the Tour of Qinghai Lake aiming to make up the nine seconds which separate him and former team-mate Hossein Askari, and take over the race lead.

The Giant Asia racing team rider was as close as two seconds to the jersey, but Askari finished third yesterday behind Marek Rutkiewicz (Poland) and Tyler Hamilton (Rock Racing). McCann was three seconds back in seventh and once the bonuses were calculated, the gap had increased to the current amount.

McCann showed his excellent form when he finished second to Alex Rasmussen (Denmark) in last Friday’s 3.8 kilometre prologue in Xining. The latter repeated his win the following day, while McCann finished two seconds back in the main group. He was seventeenth on day three, 14 seconds behind the victor Kristjan Fajt (Perutnina Ptuj), then came home in the peloton at the end of stage four. Eleventh one day later continued his solid showing and moved him from fourth to second overall.

The Pezula Racing team have also been competing in the race. They missed the opening prologue due to flight problems but were given the time of the slowest rider and allowed to continue. However arriving at the world’s highest race without time to acclimatise has clearly made things very difficult for the team.

Ciarán Power has registered the best performance thus far, netting 21st in the stage four bunch sprint.
