Murphy Gunn International Grand Prix - Result

The Murphy Gunn International Grand Prix went ahead on Saturday 12th July, and those who braved the uncertainty of the weather which we have endured recently, were treated to a great days racing. The racing was quite varied, with separate Omniums for Senior, Ladies and Tandems. We even managed to squeeze in a few races for the u/age riders who came to watch! We did experience a few showers but on each occasion the track dried within minutes and we got all our planned program run and more besides. With the National Track C/ships just around the corner and the European Masters shortly thereafter, this was an ideal opportunity for riders to test out their form under competition conditions and to try out different gearing etc. It was also a good run out for our Tandem riders, some of which will shortly depart for Beijing and they looked splendid in the new An Post kit, giving an air of professionalism to the proceedings. Indeed we were pleased to have 5 tandem pairing on show and they put on a great display of skill and speed and we would like to wish Denis Toomey and all his team continued success. The pairing of Dave Peelo / Michael Delaney were dominant in the Tandem events, but were pushed all the way, and the internal competition within the squad is partly what has raised the performance bar for these riders and partly why they have had considerable success in International competition over the past year. The ladies event was won by Aideen Collard followed by an impressive display by Junior rider, Rachel Withers (Fintona) , with Fionnuala NiBhradaigh (Bray) 3rd taking time off piloting the tandem to give solo riding a go. Indeed it was another tandem pilot, John Lynch (Bray) who stole the show by winning the Senior Omnium and the featured Murphy Gunn International Trophy race. He scored maximum points in the Scratch Race, and two lap TT, while Brendan Whelan (Lucan) was the best sprinter on the day taking full points in both the sprint and 'win & out'. Indeed it was only the minor placings in the Ikm dash that separated these two. Paul Dolan (Usher) who placed third in the Omnium also rode well and was well placed in all events and in each of the longer races, went from the gun only to be reeled in near the end of the race. In the trophy race he was half a lap clear for 10 laps and it was only eventual winner John Lynch was able to bridge the gap with two to go.

We can now look forward to our newer riders taking on the more established track riders in two weeks time at the Nationals and by the looks of things it will be a close run thing!
