Jim Tuohy from the North Tipperary wheelers is going to have a go at attempting to set a new time record for the Mizen to Malin route.
This route is well recognised as many charity cycles and fund raising ventures use Ireland Most southerly to Ireland’s most Northly points as away of attracting attention to their projects.
The route was only recognised in 2006 at the Cycling Ireland AGM as a Place to Place Record that would be recognised by the National Federation and for a record to stand a time of less than 19hrs has to be achieved.
Jim is better known in the Blazing saddles where he is renown for coming up with mad routes and ideas.
He has done all the big cycling trips like across America(2000) the Tour de Tours, Paris Nice and the Giro routes. The distance will be no bother to big Jim but doing it at the speed required is a different storey, he will have to average 19mph accumulative (which includes stops) to set a time and hold a record.
The weather and especially the wind is a big factor, he will be looking for a strong South Westerly wind to aid him on this 364mile attempt.
Jim has been coached and tutored by current record holder for the Mizen to Fair head route Padraig Marrey, Padraig will also be part of the crew giving Jim all the knowledge he has gained from doing other ultra endurance attempts like this one.
UCI Commasire Maurice Bann Lavery will over see that all CI rules and regulations are adhered to.
Jim will set off this Sunday the 13th of July from Mizen Head Co Cork at 03.30 hrs and hopes to be in Malin Head Co Donegal by 22.30.
He will be passing through the following towns at these approximate times. Kanturk (08.00) Charleville (08.30) Limerick (09.45)Nenagh (10.50) Athlone(13.30) Longford (15.00) Ballinamore(16.30) Enniskillen(18.00)Castlederg(19.20)Derry(20.20)Quigley’s point(21.20) Malin head somewhere around (22.00-22.30)
Come on out and give him a big roar as he passes.
Full report on Monday .
