Irish road race champion Siobhan Dervan had a very solid showing on Saturday’s penultimate stage of the women’s Giro d’Italia, finishing the 83.8 kilometre mountain leg to Montevecchia in 43rd place.
Race leader Fabiana Luperini (Menikini - Selle Italia) won the stage, finishing 34 seconds ahead of Amber Neben (Team Flexpoint) and pulling further ahead in the overall classification.
The final stage of the race was won by Team Columbia’s Ina Teutenberg, who took her fourth such victory in the race. Lupertini was in the main bunch but lost nine seconds due to a split; however she had a considerable buffer and ended the nine-day race two minutes and 37 seconds ahead of Neben.
Dervan was 97th on this stage and a solid 71st overall. She had been ill early on in the race and had to ride for the leaders on her Fenixs team, but can take satisfaction from her showing in one of the toughest races for female riders.
