Having ridden for her Fenix team-mates during the race, Siobhan Dervan is a solid 68th overall heading into today’s penultimate stage of the women’s Giro d’Italia. The Irish road race champion was 71st on Wednesday’s mountain stage to Monte Serra, finishing 21 minutes 29 seconds behind the day’s winner Fabiana Luperini (Menikini - Selle Italia).

She was then 61st in the following day’s time trial in Novara, covering the 9.3 kilometre course in a time one minute and five seconds off the victorious pace set by Vicki Whitelaw (Australian National Team). Yesterday’s stage was the toughest of the race and took the riders 113.4 kilometre to Laveno Mombello. It was won by Claudia Häusler (Equipe Nürnberger Versicherung). Dervan was 73rd.

Luperini holds a 42 second lead over Claudia Häusler (Equipe Nürnberger Versicherung) heading into today’s penultimate stage of the race. Nicole Brändli (Bigla Cycling Team) is a further eight seconds back, while Dervan is 44 minutes two seconds in arrears.

The stage is just 83.8 kilometres in length but the second half of this includes two first and two second-category climbs, including the summit finish of Montevecchia.
