Irish road race champion Siobhan Dervan started the women’s Tour of Italy on Saturday, placing 90th in the 1.2 kilometre prologue in Mantova.
Mirjam Melchers Van Poppel (Team Flexpoint) set the fastest time, beating Vera Carrara (Team Cmax Dila) by just 0.01 seconds and Kirsten Wild (AA-Drink Cycling Team) by 0.13. Dervan was 11.47 seconds back.
The race continued yesterday with a 131.5 kilometre road stage from Asola to Lendinara. Ina Teutenberg (Team Columbia) won the bunch gallop and took over the race lead. We don’t have a finishing position for Dervan as yet.
