First year Daniel Martin is an excellent second overall in the Route du Sud stage race in France, the 21 year old jumping up to this position after a very strong performance in today’s mountain time trial to Cauterets Cambasque.

Martin, who turned professional at the start of the season for the Slipstream Chipotle team, was sixth on the 16.9 kilometre stage. He finished one minute and 39 seconds behind the day’s winner Noan Lelarge (Bretagne - Armor Lux) and just over ten seconds off the time of fifth-placed Stefano Garzelli, the former Giro d’Italia victor.

Crucially, as Martin had placed an impressive fifth on yesterday’s opening leg to Boulogne sur Gesse, he is right to the fore in the general classification.

He will start tomorrow’s third stage just seventeen seconds behind Lelarge and is expected to receive the full backing of the Slipstream team in their attempt to win the race. He was the only one of their riders to make it into yesterday’s decisive breakaway, which saw that group finish over half an hour clear of the peloton.

Martin has made a hugely encouraging debut as a professional rider, with his results this year including sixth in Route Adélie plus fifth on a stage and eighth overall in the GP Internacional CTT Correios de Portugal. Normally it takes a neo-pro a season or two to settle in, but he has wasted no time in stepping up to the new level.

The 2.1-ranked Route du Sud continues tomorrow with a 180.6 kilometre leg to Luchon Superbagneres. It concludes on Sunday.
