Irishwoman Lousie Moriarty is riding very strongly in the prestigious Tour du Grand Montéal in Canada, placing fourteenth in yesterday’s stage four Petite-Italie criterium and holding 26th place overall. She is also twelfth in the sprint classification.

Suzanne De Goede (Equipe Nürnberger Versicher) won the bunch sprint to take fourth stage honours, beating Oenone Wood (High Road Women) and Rochelle Gilmore (Menikini-Selle Italia Master colour). Moriarty also finished in the same time.

De Goode had started the stage second overall but her win moved her ahead of Judith Arndt (High Road Women) in the general classification. Moriarty is 40 seconds back heading into today’s fifth and final stage, a 115 kilometre road race to be held on the Mont-Saint-Hilaire circuit.

She was a non-finisher in Saturday’s World Cup race held in the same area but showed strong form from the start of the four-day tour. It began on Tuesday with a 85.5 kilometre road race held in Châteauguay, and there Regina Schleicher (Equipe Nürnberger Versicher) triumphed in a bunch gallop. Moriarty was 34th, and then finished 19th behind stage victor Arndt the following day. The German soloed home six seconds ahead of the field.

Moriarty was seventh overall heading into the first of yesterday’s two stages, a 3.5 kilometre time trial held in Lachine. Arndt beat De Goede by four seconds, while Moriarty was a further nineteen seconds babck in 37th place. However she followed this up with that strong afternoon performance in the criterium.

Although she has shown in this race that she is capable of mixing it with the best riders in the world, Moriarty is one of those who was controversially overlooked for funding this year. She, Siobhan Dervan and Jenny Fay fell short due to what appears to be inequalities in the carding system with regard to female performances.
