Boot Inn Women's League - Round 3
By Heather Boyle

Orwell Wheelers hosted Round 3 of the Boot Inn League last night. Almost 30 women turned out to race, with Heather Boyle (Ravens) coming home first, ahead of Roisin Kennedy (Lucan) and Jenn O'Reilly (Ravens).

The break looking vicious

This week saw a 13 woman strong limit group get a 7.5 minutes head start on scratch, with semi scratch 2 minutes ahead of scratch. Semi Scratch had a couple of new faces - with Nicole flying the flag for South Africa, and Amanda Corey making the jump up from Limit for the first time. Siobhan Jacob also raced in this group, taking an evening off from her rowing commitments.

Chasing group

Knowing that the groups ahead had strong riders meant that the pace had to be hectic from the start for Scratch, the only way to reel in the groups was by rolling up steadily. Halfway through lap 3 scratch and semi scratch came together, at which point Roisin, Heather and Orla Hendron (Orwell Wheelers) made a jump up the road, and managed to hold the distance for another lap. The chasing bunch spotted the slowing pace of the break - as they were approaching the limit riders, and started to push up the pressure..

Scratch group doing roll ups

Coming into the final roundabout, around 2km from the line the groups were almost altogether again - having swallowed up Orla. On the line Heather held the lead, ahead of Roisin, with Jenn O'Reilly winning the bunch sprint for third from Coleen Foley and Norah Daly (both Swords) and Ballymena's Louise Fullerton taking the 6th place.

"Thanks to all the Orwell Wheeler volunteers and marshals for all their help. Thanks also to Joe Daly Cycles and Powerbar for sponsoring the primes, which were won by Ciara Lyons (Orwell), Jenn O'Reilly (Ravens) and Aideen Collard (Orwell)."

The Women's Commission are encouraging women to contact Orla Hendron if they are interested in improving their abilities at teamwork and team tactics.

On the 14th June Bray Wheelers are hosting a race for Cat C riders, and women. We are hoping to divide the women into equally matched teams of 5/6 riders, and provide managers and coaches for each team. This should prove to be a fun and competitive exercise, and is open to any riders who are interested in improving their race skills, before the upcoming National Championships (Cork 27th/28th June) and in Rás na mBan (12th-14th Sept).

Please reply to Orla Hendron (086-2500754 orlahendron @ hotmail.com) expressing your interest, before Wed 11th June.
