Irish professional Philip Deignan finished 43rd on the first real mountain stage of this year’s Giro d’Italia today, reaching the line in the mountain village of Pescocostanzo four minutes and one second after the stage winner Gabriele Bosisio (LPR Brakes – Ballan).

Race leader Giovanni Visconti (Quick Step) was dropped by several race favourites including defending champion Danilo Di Luca (LPR Brakes – Ballan) and 2007 Tour de France winner Alberto Contador (Astana), finishing 29th.

However the buffer he gained on yesterday’s stage sees him remain in the pink jersey, with closest rival Matthias Russ (Gerolsteiner) now dropping to nine seconds back.

Deignan moves up twelve places to 49th overall, eleven minutes and seven seconds back, and is also ninth in the best young rider classification.

The race continues tomorrow with a lumpy 208 kilometre stage from Rivisondoli to Tivoli.
