Philip Deignan again rode well in the Giro d’Italia yesterday, ending the stage in the same time as the main favourites at the end of the marathon 232 kilometre stage to Peschici.

For the second consecutive day, the race had a hilltop finish. Deignan crossed the line in 43rd place, with all of the riders in the 50-man group finishing 11 minutes 34 seconds behind the day’s winner Matteo Priamo.

The Italian from the CSF Group Navigarre team was part of an eleven-man break that was allowed to gain a considerable amount of time on the field as none of them were considered a threat for the overall classification.

Deignan held onto his solid 61st place overall and will hope to move up the general classification when the race heads into tougher terrain today.

(May 15) DEIGNAN FINISHES WITH RACE FAVOURITES ON STAGE 5

Irish rider Philip Deignan had a solid showing on today’s hilltop finish of the Giro d’Italia, crossing the line in a 67 man group which contained all the race favourites. These finished 31 seconds behind the day’s winner Pavel Brutt (Tinkoff Credit Systems), who was one of five riders who broke clear early on and stayed away to fight it out for the victory.

Race leader Franco Pellizotti was in the group and thus retains the pink jersey. Deignan is now 61st overall, 1 minute and 50 seconds back. He is 12th in the best young rider competition.

The race continues tomorrow with a rolling stage to Paschici.
