Irish professional Philip Deignan (Ag2r La Mondiale) finished as part of the main bunch on today’s fourth stage of the Giro d’Italia, at 183 kilometre leg from Pizzo Calabro to Catanzaro Lungomare.
The stage was won by Mark Cavendish (Team High Road), who proved quickest in the big bunch gallop to the line. Deignan was 96th and was classified in the same time as Cavendish.
Italian rider Franco Pellizotti (Liquigas) remains one second clear of Christian Vande Velde (Slipstream Chipotle Presented By H30) in the overall standings. Deignan is 64th overall, 1 minute and 50 seconds back.
He’s hoping to move up the general classification when the mountains start on stage seven.
The stage was marked by a long distance breakaway effort by Belgian rider Rik Verbrugghe (Cofidis - Le Crédit par Téléphone). He built a maximum lead of over eleven minutes but was finally caught after 164 kilometres out front.
