Daniel Martin (Slipstream-Chipotle) was a solid 46th in the Trophée des Grimpeurs in France yesterday. He finished one minute behind winner David Lelay (Bretagne - Armor Lux). His cousin Nicolas Roche (Crédit Agricole) was 54th, 43 seconds further back.
“Dan and I were away since the half-way point in the race,” said Roche afterwards. “There were seven in front and myself and Chavanel came back to that group with about six laps to go. Dan then came back one lap later as part of a chasing group of eight.
“On the bottom part of the last lap there were only six riders left in front with Dan and myself. They attacked before the climb. I stayed with the four others and we were caught on the descent of the climb with seven kilometres remaining. Dan was only caught with 700 metres to go.
“The winner had been in front with Dan, but he made it across the line. Myself and Dan were both going well, the two of us made a lot of efforts early on as usually this race is settled pretty early. This was the first time that a chasing group of 50 riders came to the finish together!”
Roche had originally hoped to ride his second Giro d’Italia but his Crédit Agricole team were not invited. He will ride the two-day, 2.1-ranked Clásica Internacional a Alcobendas y Collado Villalba in Spain this weekend, then goes to Portugal to ride the identically-ranked GP Internacional Paredes Rota dos Móveis from Thursday week until Sunday May 18th.
As mentioned elsewhere on this site, Pezula Racing professional Ciarán Power once again showed his strong form when he finished an excellent eighth in the 1.2-ranked Ronde van Overijssel in the Netherlands on Saturday.
The Waterford rider sprinted in as part of a peloton led home by Robin Chaigneau (Team Asito – Löwik). Fellow Irishman Paídi O’Brien was tenth, with Derek Burke (Pezula Racing) 71st, 41 seconds back.
O’Brien’s foreign An Post-M Donnelly-Grant Thornton Sean Kelly team-mates Kieran Page, Cameron Jennings and Rieno Stofferis were 41st, 82nd and 114th.
