The first round of the Boot Inn League got off to a great start, with thirty-three riders signing on! Won by Kate Rudd (Cycleways), the race was an introduction to racing for most of the participants.
Before the race coaches Paddy Doran, Scott McDonald Geoff Liffey demonstrated basic bike handling skills to the group - to ensure safe cycling. They also described how to cycle in a group, going through the gears to be used, the terms they might hear, and how to do roll-ups.
Before the actual race started the beginner's group was split into two, with Scott and Geoff each cycling around for a lap - giving advice on the bike. After a quick re-group at the Boot Inn the handicaps were decided, and the race was off.
Geoff and Scott pedalled around with their groups - coaching and guiding, while the more experienced scratch group of 12 worked hard to close the gap on the groups ahead. This introductory race was two laps - and on the second lap the gaps were closing.
Coming into the last corner, and final couple of kilometres, first time racers Peta Stomps (Orwell Wheelers) and Jen O Reilly made a smart move of jumping in with the breakaway group of Kate Rudd, Fiona Barrett and Heather Boyle, and the five raced it to the line, in the order Kate, Fiona, Heather, Peta and Jen. Lucan's Roisin Kennedy (Boot Inn League 2007 winner) took sixth place.
Many thanks to the coaches, the marshalls (thanks to Orwell Wheelers for all your help!) and to Larry Farrell for finishing. Thanks of course to all the riders for making it an enjoyable first race of the league. The next round of the Boot Inn League will be hosted by Ravens CC on the 14th May. This will be run as a 4 lap handicapped race. We look forward to seeing you back!
