The Irish-registered Sean Kelly team yesterday took what was arguably its most significant win to date when Daniel Lloyd ran out as final overall victor in the Vuelta a Extremadura in Spain.
Lloyd and fellow Briton Dan Fleeman finished safely in the main bunch at the end of the 144.1 kilometre race in and around Moraleja, netting 19th and 29th on the stage and first and tenth in the general classification. The other team riders sacrificed their own high placings to defend Lloyd’s lead.
Irish rider Paídi O’Brien had started the day eleventh overall but he and Benny De Schrooder came home in a group 7 minutes and 33 seconds back, having ridden for Lloyd in order to ensure the team victory. They were 50th and 48th on the stage and dropped to 46th and 45th place respectively.
Saturday’s fourth stage in and around Casar de Cáceres was won in a solo attack by Manuel Lloret Zaragoza (Comunitat Valenciana – CCN). He finished 14 seconds ahead of a group of riders led in by
André Vital (Madeinox – Boavista). Lloyd placed seventh and, with previous race leader De Schrooder finishing alongside O’Brien and Fleeman in a bunch 1 minute and 27 seconds back, he took over at the top of the general classification. O’Brien dropped from third overall to eleventh, while De Schrooder found himself seventh on GC.
Lloyd was therefore the team’s designated leader for the final stage, and the rest of the riders dedicated themselves to helping him to hold on to the jersey. They did so, with Kenny Lisabeth, Christian Müller and Frank Van Kuik going deep into their reserves and being ultimately listed as non-finishers.
However the riders will all be delighted with the final result in the 2.2-ranked event, as well as the fact that they kept the race leader’s jersey within the team from the first stage. O’Brien took yellow when the squad won the team time trial on the opening day.
In addition to Lloyd’s victory, De Schrooder was second in the points classification. Lloyd and O’Brien were eighth and tenth in that competition, with Lloyd also eighth in the special sprints prize.
