Pezula's Ciaran Power was back to winning ways in a 1.2 ranked Union Cycliste Internationale Event when he triumphed in the East Midland Classic at Molten Mambray close to the city of Nottingham today.
The Pezula Boys dominated the 'Classic' throughout the 158kms of racing. From the off, Power, David O'Loughlin, Cameron Jennings and Kieran Page were always in the fray which included 11 sections of off road terrain.
When Bos attacked, I marked him and then closed him down and went past him. We were going well at the Shay Elliott last week, but as a team we were really on it today," Power said of his Pezula team mates.
After 50kms a group of 10 forged ahead with the Pezula quartet dictating the pace.
The defending champion, Malcolm Elliott missed the initial move but after 80kms of racing he was leading the chase and closing in on the lead group.
As the lead groups advantage was beginning to erode, last weekends winner of the Shay Elliott David O'Loughlin in Bray exerted pressure which split leaving Power, Page, O'Loughlin and the Dutchman Yan Boss at the head of the race.
In the closing kilometers, Page and O'Loughlin lost contact and Boss made an all out assault to land the spoils with 3kms remaining.
It took all the reserves that Power could muster to reel the Dutchman back and in the dash to the line the Waterford man got the verdict.
For Ciaran, this was an extra special win which will help his cause for selection for the Beijing Games next August.
In the Tom Sheehan Memorial in Carrick-on-Suir, the winner Sam Bennett of the Dan Morrissey/ Carrick Wheelers CC got special permission to compete in the event. Sam is a second year junior and had to receive special permission to race with the Seniors.
