Over a month after he finished an excellent sixth in the individual pursuit event at the world track championships, Irish professional David O’Loughlin is still uncertain as to whether he will qualify for the Olympic Games.

The 29 year old ended the season ninth in the world rankings for the discipline, and just missed out on the qualification places recently confirmed by the UCI. He was seventh, eighth and fourth in World Cup races during the 2007/2008 season, but missed the Sydney round of the series.

However he has been confirmed as first reserve for the Olympic place and will get the nod for Beijing if one of the other countries that have qualified a place decides not to send their full contingent of riders.

“I think the UCI nominate one reserve place and that is the one I got,” he said. “I just have to wait and see, unfortunately. We did talk to one or two nations just to see, and there is a possibility all right.

“I will know on the 20th of June. It is not great [to have to wait so long], but I will train away as if I am going to the Olympics. We will see in June.”

The Mayo rider won the Shay Elliott Memorial last Sunday and is due to ride the East Midlands race this weekend in England. After that he and his Pezula team will ride two 1.1 ranked races in mainland Europe before lining out in the FBD Insurance Rás, Philly week [the Commerce Bank Triple Crown of Cycling] and the Tour de Beauce. He is then aiming to defend his national road race crown.
