Ciarán Power had an excellent conclusion to the Presidential Cycling Tour in Turkey, landing two-top eight placings over the weekend.

The Irish National Team rider was fifth on Saturday’s 115.8 kilometre stage from Finkie to Antalya, crossing the line in the same time as the day’s victor Alessandro Petacchi (Team Milram). David McCann was next best of the Ireland riders, finishing five seconds back in 25th.

Power was then eighth on yesterday’s final day of racing, finishing to the fore in a large bunch sprint won by Ariel Maximiliano Richeze (CSF Group Navigare). McCann was 100th with Peter Hawkins, Sean Lacey and Martyn Irvine 104th, 110th and 114th respectively.

David Garcia Dapena (Karpin Galicia) ran out as the overall winner of the 2.1-ranked event, beating nearest competitors Jose Benitez Roman (Saunier Duval-Scott) and Pieter Jacobs (Silence-Lotto) by 18 seconds. McCann and Power were 46th and 50th overall, each a little over 23 minutes back.

Power had a solid showing in the points competition, placing tenth. In addition to the aforementioned fifth and eight places, he was also seventh on stage one and 18th on day two.

One of his major aims for the season is to gain selection for what would be his third successive Olympic Games.
