Nicolas Roche had a solid ride in yesterday’s Amstel Gold race, finishing 57th out of 183 starters. After over six and a half hours of racing, the 23 year old crossed the line just three minutes and 13 seconds behind race winner Damiano Cunego (Lampre).
Former Giro d´Italia winner Cunego proved strongest on the finishing climb of the Cauberg, following a blistering attack by 2006 race victor Frank Schleck and then jumping past the Luxembourg rider to snatch victory.
They had been part of a nine man breakaway move which also included Davide Rebellin (Gerolsteiner), Serguei Ivanov (Astana), Joachim Rodriguez and Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne), Thomas Dekker (Rabobank), Karsten Kroon (CSC) and Christian Pfannberger (Barloworld).
Valverde and Rebellin were unable to match the other two inside the final 500 metres, finishing two seconds adrift.
