PHILIP FITZSIMONS RIP – FBD RÁS REACTION
By FBD Insurance Ras
Apr 22, 2008,

Email this article
Irish cycling was shocked and saddened over the weekend with the news of the sudden death of Philip Fitzsimons, Chief Executive, FBD Insurance.

Philip Fitzsimons was a long time friend of the FBD Ras and everybody who was involved with the race would have known him well, the picture here shows Philip on the podium with the winner of the 2008 FBD Rás Tony Martin of the Germany Thuringer Energie team

Since the first year of FBD Insurance sponsorship in 1984, Philip was an integral part of the great relationship built up between the race organisation and FBD. His love of the race was such that at times it seemed even to have taken priority over the company to which he was so totally committed.

“Philip was a great friend of the Rás, and of Irish cycling in general,” said FBD Insurance Rás race organiser Dermot Dignam on Wednesday. “He put a great deal into the sport and was very passionate about the race. On a personal level, he was also a very generous and kind individual, and will be missed greatly by all who knew him. His passing is a big shock.”

To Paula and his children we express our deepest sympathy at the sad loss of a devoted husband and proud father. To Philip’s extended family, friends, work colleagues and to FBD Insurance we share in the pain of losing a beloved friend.

Ar dheis Dé go a raibh a anam.

'All in FBD know that Philip's contribution to the company has been outstanding,' Chairman Michael Berkery said in a statement.

'chief executive since 2003 he led the company through a period of profitable growth. His wise and considerate counsel along with his energy and passion will be missed by all in the company,' he added.

Earlier this month, FBD said it had received a takeover approach from the Netherlands' biggest insurer Eureko.

FBD this morning said it had appointed Andrew Langford as its interim CEO. Mr. Langford has been group financial director with FBD since 2004.
