Saturday 19th April sees the welcome return of Tandem Racing to Irish Cycling with the inclusion of a Tandem Race as part of the John Beggs Memorial race hosted by Banbridge Cycling Club in Dromore Co. Down starting at 12 noon.
For a couple of years a Tandem Time Trial has been included in the National Championships and hopefully this is the first step towards getting full road race status re-established at National Championship level.
The success of our Paralympic cyclists has helped to re-kindle an interest in tandem cycling within the general cycling fraternity and a number of clubs especially in Ulster have being encouraging tandem entries in their club Time Trials.
Back in the 50s and 60s tandem racing was very popular at race meetings up and down the country but died away completely through the 70s and 80s. It is hoped that many other clubs will follow in the steps of Banbridge CC and start including a Tandem race in their programme and help re-build this spectacular racing event.
The race on the 19th will be a combined race, open to male, female or mixed tandems, so the appeal to all tandem owners is to come to Dromore on the 19th and help ensure an exciting race.
Sign on is at the Scout Hall in Dromore.
