After round 3 of The Zoo Hair Salon/ Velotex Women’s National League, we have a big shake up in the standings! The Race winner was UCD's Louise Moriarty, and the leader has been passed to Tullamore's Francine Meehan.
Fran, after spending all of last year in the leaders Jersey, stood on the start line on Sunday once again in Pink, due to the absence of Fiona Meade and Heather Boyle. Determined to hold on to it for real, Fran rode a gutsy race to put herself 3 points clear of Cathy Flynn in Second, and joint third is now Roisin Kennedy, Kama Rouse and Aideen Collard.
Despite the testing wintry conditions that were looming all day, a strong field of women lined up in Balbriggan for what was to be a hard day of racing in severe wind conditions.
The biggest attack of the day was by Orwell's Orla Hendron, who rode away from the bunch on the first big climb. Experienced Louise Moriarty rode across to her - and between them they held off the rest of the field, to claim the top spots.
Fran attacked out of the chasing group in the first lap - and time trialled the remainder of the race, displaying her immense strength, by holding third place. Louise Harliwich and Kama Rouse were both extremely unfortunate to puncture on their second lap, as they had been riding strongly in the chasing bunch. Roisin Kennedy, Sarah Piner and Cathy Flynn claimed 4th, 5th and 6th.
A big thanks to Oliver Mc Kenna and his team who put on a great race and for the first time we had a junior prize which went to Northern rider Jessica Laird, who finished ahead of Rachel Withers. Both juniors put in a great performance starting in the bunch this week, with the order reversed from last week - which one will be top Junior in Mullingar? The next National League Race will be hosted by Lakeside Wheelers on the 18th May.
Thanks must also go to Rory Wall who we dragged out of the Cycling Ireland office to do Lead Car for us.
And finally a big thank you to the Women who provided us with excellent refreshments afterwards.
