Hennessy / Burke win
By Gerard Cromwell
Michael Hennessy gave the promoting club a fine victory when he took the Silver Pail Grand Prix held over 110kms in Fermoy yesterday.
Hennessy was part of a nine man group that went clear on the opening lap but split shortly afterwards due to lack of cooperation. John O'Brien (Dan Morrissey), Comeragh's Peter Gator and Michael Stone (West Clare) forged ahe while the others looked at each other behind.
This quartet were joined by Michael Fitzgerald (Dan Morrissey) and last week's winner Michael Concannon (Killorglin) after a late chase and the new lead group opened up a maximum advantage of almost three minutes over the peloton.
Stone and Firzgerald were dropped on the run in while Hennessy attacked the other three with a mile to go. The Fermoy man finished 20 seconds clear to the delight of a raucous home crowd. Concannon took the sprint for second ahead of O'Brien and Gator while Stone and Fitzgerald took fifth and sixth, 50 seconds and one minute 45 seconds down respectively.
National veterans champion Martin O'Loughlin (Dan Morrissey) added to his son Michael's win in the under 12 race when he romped in three minutes clear of Limerick's Tom Shanahan for victory in the 80kms veteran's, juniors Simon Fox gave Fermoy another home win in the under 14 race while Eamon Maher (Dan Morrissey) took the under 16 race, the Dan Morrissey club taking their first underage wins since Brian Kenneally in the 90s.
Derek Burke and Ryan Conor continued the domination of the domestic cycling scene by the Pezula professional team when they took a one-two in the prestigious Ben McKenna Memorial in Balbriggan yesterday, with Burke taking his second win in as many weeks.
The duo were part of a 21 man group that went clear early on in the 150kms race. By the end of the second 30km lap the group had split, with Burke and Conor up front with just Neil Delahaye (Usher Insulations) for company. Despite the strong winds this trio opened up a large gap on the chasers and on the final of five ascents of the Naul Hill, Burke attacked the breakaway and went clear.
With Conor marking Delahaye behind, Burke opened up a maximum advantage of two minutes before eventually crossing the line a minute clear of his rivals. Conor outsprinted Delahaye to give the Pezula another one-two while Lucan’s Daniel Kirwan took fourth, ten seconds later ahead of James McMaster (Dave Kane Northern), Greg Swinand (Usher Insulations) and four others. “I had really, really good legs today,” said Burke afterwards. “I thought Delahaye was a bit tired when I attacked on the Naul Hill the last lap, but it was a bit far out to think I could stay away. It was very windy and I knew if I could get out of the headwind with 30 or 40 seconds I had a chance, so I just put the head down and when they told me at the top of the last hill that I had a minute and a half, I knew I was home and dry. I didn’t have a great start to the season at the Giro Del Capo with Pezula in South Africa, but I’ve done a lot of hard training recently and I think the recent Ras Mumhan brought me on a bit. We had to ride on the front for most of the race there because Ciaran (Power) had the jersey, so hopefully the form is coming at the right time now.”
Burke heads to Belgium on Wednesday as part of Cycling Ireland’s U/23 squad, where he will compete in the under 23 World Cup series including the Tour of Flanders and Liege-Bastogne-Liege classics.

The inaugural Wicklow Triathlon Club Open Time Trial was held on the N11 on Sunday 6th April. Weather conditions were extreme, with a biting cold Northerly wind gusting to 40kph.
That however didn’t stop the event winner [ John Lynch, Bray Wheelers ] from smashing the course record by recording a time of 26’ 38”. We guess his 54 x 11 top gear, got plenty of use on the return stretch.
Given the difficult conditions, we were particularly impressed with the number of Sub 30 Minute times recorded!
The results were as follows;
1 John Lynch 26 38
2 John Oram 27 25
3 Declan Kinch 27 59
4 Aidan Hammond 28 28
5 Derrick Evans 28 52
