Irish Intervarsity Championships

Report from the recent Irish Intervarsity Championships held in the Phoenix Park.

A field of over 60 riders took to closed roads of a 7km circuit in the Phoenix Park for the Irish Intervarsity Championships. Maurice O’Brien (UCC) and Louise Moriarty (UCD) dominated the overall classification, both winning their respective road race and time trials.

O’Brien broke from a group of five to take victory in the 7 lap men’s race

Tim O’Regan (DCU) edged out Brian Crinion (DCU) in the sprint for second,

just ahead of Michael Reddan (DIT) and Chris O’Hare (DCU)

Louise Moriarty soloed to victory in the women’s 3 lap race ahead of Pauline Griffen (DCU) and Joanne Hickey (TCD)



The Time Trial was held in the afternoon on the Boot Inn circuit. Maurice O’Brien set the fastest time of 10:52,

with Paul Brady (QUB) 4 seconds back

William Connelly (LMIT) took third place in a time of 11:08


Moriarty took the ladies time trial with a time of 11:57, with Hickey holding off the challenge of Griffen to take second place by 5 seconds, thus securing 2nd place overall

1. Maurice O'Brien (UCC) 200 points
2. Brian Crinion (UCD) 169 points
3. Tim O'Regan (DCU) 160 points
4. Michael Reddan (DIT) 152 points
5. Anthony Walsh (DIT) 142 points
6. Diarmuid O'Cronin (DCU) 141 points
7. Stephen Teeling-Lynch (QUB) 138 points
8. William Connelly (LMIT) 135 points
9. Darren Hughes ( Garda College ) 125 points
10. Chris O'Hare (DCU) 120 points

6. Grainne Finn (UCD) 141 points
7. Aoife O'Donohue (DCU) 131 points
8. Grainne Phelan (DCU) 131 points
9. Joanne O'Sullivan (Law) 82 points

11. Mairead Nic Gabhann (UCD) 64 points

The race was kindly supported by the OPW and the Gardai, without the work of whom the race could not have gone ahead. The organisers would like to express their gratitude to all who helped and those who took part on the day.
