The second round of the 2008 Women's National League saw a record number of entries, with 27 riders signing on. St. Finbarr's Fiona Meade took the win, making it two in a row, with Francine Meehan (Tullamore), Louise Moriarty(UCD) and Joanna Hickey (Usher) taking 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
With the welcome addition of Junior Women to the races, a handicap was given to future stars Rachel Whithers and Jessica Laird, and the main bunch had to work hard to close the gap. (wo)man of the match had to be Fran Meehan whose relentless attacking saw her in every break that got away. Along with Swords Team mates Louise Harliwich and Coleen Foley, she closed the gap on the juniors, and they worked together to stay away from the chasing bunch for the first half of the race.
It was only when the bunch started rolling up and over together and pushing the pace up, did this gap close - only to be opened up again, almost immediately, by Fran - this time with Fiona, Joanna and International Rider Louise Moriarty. They managed to hold their lead to the line, on the rest of the field that had broken up to several smaller chasing groups.
For the first time in a National League race, the full spectrum of women's racing in Ireland was represented, from the Juniors, and new starters, to our elites Louise Moriarty and Jenny Fay. The range of abilities and speeds added an extra dynamic to the racing. Hopefully we can see a similar turnout for round three - next Sunday (6th April) in Balbriggan!
Thanks to Marie Reilly and her team who organised a super race, catering for the best showing of women at a National League Race.
