The smile on the face of the organiser of Ras Luimini Ken Duffy said it all! He was a very happy and contented man at the prize giving in the Community Centre in Fedamore yesterday afternoon.

The former cyclist with Limerick CC and now with the hands-on approach of organising a very successful day of racing in the Fedamore area of Co. Limerick yesterday afternoon had a warm glow about him as he dished out the prizes after a record turnout.

Like most parts of the country Co. Limerick got its fair share of rain during the two events held over 98 and 70kms of competition with the ‘Closhessys climb inflicting the most damage on the record turnout.

But the day belonged to Robin Kelly of Comeragh CC and Andre Engerman of the St. Tiernan’s club who won the Combined event.

I should not have been surprised when Robin Kelly won Ras Luimini as I was advised in the last number of days by Sinead Power, sister of Ciaran that Comeragh CC were going to be in the mix this year.

Evidently the conditions suited the Comeragh guys as they had three in the top six, which by all accounts was a magnificent effort as they are not household names. So, we better take note and watch their progress with a certain amount of respect. Immediately from the off of ‘Ras Luimini five forged ahead. Included was Michael Hennessy of the Fermoy CC the defending champion and Vincent Gleeson of West Clare CC. Going out on the last Hennessy and Gleeson were in the driving seat.

But Robin Kelly and Maurice O’Brien of Kanturk Credit Union CC were now in hot pursuit. They made the junction to the two leaders who were more than surprised to have company on the last lap having shelled their other breakaway companions who let be said were very much instrumental in keeping the break ahead of the bunch.

In the end it was Kelly who got the verdict ahead of Hennessy with the runner up. The combined event was a solo winning effort of Andre Engerman of the St. Tiernan’s club in Ballinteer, Dundrum who since the start of the season has been a regular top finisher.

Hopefully, both winners may have the opportunity of spending some of their prize money in the sponsor’s bike shop in Limerick, Joe Carroll who along with Treaty Distributors supports Limerick CC.
