Ireland’s Team Pursuit squad is ready to compete at the forthcoming World Cup finale in Copenhagen (15th to 17th February). The team pursuit selection consists of Dermot Nally, Martyn Irvine, Paul Healion and Brian Kenneally. The team will attempt to break the Irish record which stands at 4 minutes 15 seconds, set recently in Beijing. The squad have been undergoing intensive preparations in Ghent.
Ireland’s top pursuiter David O’Loughlin will be missing from the squad as he is riding with his Pezula Trade team and concentrating on his ambition to qualify for the Olympic Games in the individual pursuit.
Cycling Ireland’s High Performance Director Frank Campbell said it will be tough to improve on the fine team pursuit time recorded in Beijing which set the Irish record, especially with David O’Loughlin absent as he concentrates on Worlds and Olympic qualification in the individual pursuit.
However Campbell feels that the squad is very strong and has every chance to set new standards. In addition the experience of Copenhagen will be invaluable going forward.
