The first ladies training camp of the year took place in Blessington, Co Wicklow this past weekend. It brought together almost 60 female cyclists from all over Ireland including the North, which makes it a huge success in the eyes of the sponsors, Women In Sport, coaches and delegates.
The camp offered valuable training and focused teaching in small groups with a great social experience in the scenic Wicklow Mountains. Delegates included major national champions and international cyclists from all levels who were happy to share their knowledge with less experienced riders.
The camp brought together ladies at all levels of cycling including the Women’s Comission’s Development Squad, which was coached by Paddy Doran, who has thirty years experience of coaching at international level under his belt.
Toni Rossiter of the National Coaching and Training Centre in Limerick spoke about cycling specific sports physiology. The experienced coaches Scott McDonald of Winning Solutions (road) , Aidan Hammond (road) and Aidan Ryan (mtb) took individual groups on spins, coaching them throughout the weekend, greatly improving riders’ skills, bike handling and their training knowledge.
Delegates included cyclists that have represented Ireland internationally in road racing and mountain biking, as well as triathletes and touring cyclists.
The second training camp will take place on 23rd/24th February. For more information contact Alex Dobbs at womens.racing.ireland(@)gmail.com or check out www.irishcycling.com Juniors welcome!
