Louise Moriarty has continued to show strong form after her victory last month in the points race at the second round of the Revolution series in Australia.
The multiple Irish track champion took another victory in the points event held at the Devonport Carnival on December 30th, one of those counting for the Tasmanian Christmas Carnivals series. She beat Laura McCaughey and Amy Cure, the win coming about thanks mainly to her sprint victory in the second gallop of the race.
Moriarty had been in action several days earlier when she rode the Latrobe Carnival, the first event in the Tasmanian series. She was fifth behind Kirsty Broun in the 2000 metre wheelrace, and then placed ninth in the UCI women’s points event.
McCaughey came out best there and was also the victor in the Burnie Carnival held on New Year’s day. She beat Cure and Moriarty on that occasion.
The Irishwoman had won the first sprint and in placing second in the next, moved into the overall lead in the race. However strong riding by McCaughey and Cure would see them overtake her before the finish.
Moriarty is building form before the Los Angeles round of the World Cup. She’s chasing Olympic qualification and so is hoping for a strong performance there. The World Cup is running from January 18th – 20th. Several male riders from Ireland are also expected to take part, including David O’Loughlin.
