The Connacht Mountain League round 4 finally took place yesterday (Sunday, 30th December) in great weather conditions in Ross Wood, Rosscahill, Co.Galway. It was held on a great and difficult course set by Fran Kearns of Westcoast Wheelers. Thanks also to Peter Walsh (Rosscahill) and Coillte for the use of the wood.

Mountain Biking in Connacht continues to grow: each round we have had new competitors, and the racing gets more completive each outing.

The Senior section was close on lap one with Brian O’Donnell (West Coast Wheelers) leading Padraig Marrey (Murphy & Gunn). However Marrey’s fitness came to the fore to take it from league leader O’Donnell.

Newcomer Brendan Monaghan (Westcoast Wheelers) piped league leader to take the under 8 section. Morgan Walsh Roberts (Realt) was on top form to take the under 10 group from an improved Mark Finnerty (Western Lakes).

Edel Burke (Innishfree Wheelers) was very strong to take the ladies section. The big battle of the day was between Shane O’Hara (Kanturk) and Chris Kennedy (Covey Wheelers) in the under 12 race. Kennedy took the spoils on the line.

Gavin Burke (Innishfree Wheelers) was again very strong in the under 14 section, taking 3 minutes out of Dara Reidy (Covey Wheelers). Meanwhile William Sheridan showed his strengths to take under 16 from Michael O’Shea and league leader Diarmuid Hughes, all of whom ride for Covey Wheelers.

Another Covey Wheelers rider Sean Carolan took the junior section from team-mate Damien Gavin.
