The final race of the Dan Morrissey Carrick Wheelers Beginners League took place last week in Faugheen and there was a good turnout of family and friends to see the concluding race and applaud the young cyclists on receiving their overall prizes. Thanks to the generosity of the sponsors, O’Ceallachains Bar and Restaurant, there was something for everyone who participated, and that’s what this league was all about, getting kids involved in cycling and hopefully finding some of the stars of the future.
There was some great racing again on the final evening, with all the young cyclists giving their all to gain maximum points in the last event. In the one lap race for the younger cyclists, Niamh O’Mahony put in a great performance to make up her tough time handicap and pass Eoghan Harris just before the finish, with Paddy Bartley just behind in third place. Caoimhe Kelly came storming through to snatch fourth place and deprive James English of the points he needed, and this meant that Paddy Bartley was the overall winner on 56 points, with James English pipped by one point and finishing second, while Niamh O’Mahony’s win moved her up to third overall just one more point back on 54.
The three lap race provided some great racing also, but Eamonn Maher was the dominant racer throughout the league, scoring 70 points from a possible 80 and proving to be a worthy winner and a great prospect for the future. The final race was won by Seamus Babington, who moved up from the one lap to the three lap race for the last event and also showed good potential, making the most of his time handicap and winning easily. John Cuddihy did well to finish second on the night, and Sean Hahessy really impressed by battling all the way to hold of the fast finishing Eamonn Maher and gain a well deserved third place. Overall second place was very close, with Aaron O’Donnell getting the better of Bryan Alton and finishing on 61 points, with Bryan on 59 for third overall.
So some great racing, but more importantly a total of 34 young people introduced to the sport of road cycle racing and enjoying six weeks of competition in relative safety. Dan Morrisssey Carrick Wheelers would like to thank everyone who helped make the league a success and the club hope to continue to encourage these young cyclists to stay involved in the sport, and who knows, maybe become the stars of the future.
