Boot Inn Round 8
By Women's Commission
Aug 9, 2007,

Email this article
In a tight sprint for the top three places, Cathy Flynn of Lakeside Wheelers took her first victory at the Boot Inn League last night.

Orwell Wheelers provided marshals for the sunny 20 mile road race. The riders were split into two groups, with the Limit group containing Ingrid Owens (UCD), newcomers Barbara Mannion and Kathleen Gill, Patrizia Mingardi and Rachel Eager (Lucan CRC).

Race Director Ronnie Brannigan gave them a generous handicap, and Scratch followed behind in up-and-over mode. The gap came down steadily and with just over one lap to go, the games began.

League Leader Roisin Kennedy (Lucan CRC) made the first move, countered by Coleen Foley (McNally Swords) and Geraldine Gill (Lamballe). Then it was all back together when two Scratch riders, Valerie Considine (Usher IRC) and Orla Tansey (Orwell Dundrum TC) both ran into difficulty, when they both hit a large pothole. Considine punctured immediately, but Tansey was able to continue on for another half a lap before being brought to a stop with another puncture.

By the time Tansey had to drop out, there was only half a lap to go, and she was one of four Scratch riders that had a narrow lead over the remaining Scratch riders of Foley, Nicky Veale (Stamullen) and Norah Daly (McNally Swords).

This group went on to catch the remains of Limit, with Barbara Mannion stepping up her pace to join in with Cathy Flynn, Geraldine Gill and Roisin Kennedy. Flynn was on the front when the sprint began, and kept her lead to take the win. Kennedy and Gill finished next with Mannion finishing an excellent fourth in her first ever Boot Inn race. Eager kept ahead of the chasing Scratch riders to finish fifth, and Veale took the sprint in the chasing group to finish sixth.

Cathy’s win moves her up to second place overall in the league with two races to go. Kennedy retains the Velotex leaders jersey for the next race which is in two week’s time on August 22nd at 7pm. A group will leave the GPO at 6pm to cycle to the race. All abilities and newcomers welcome. Thanks to Orwell Wheelers for all their help.
