Rás bid for London Irish:

The newly formed London Irish / sdeals.com cycling club has its first major team outing in this year’s FBD Milk Rás in Ireland in May.

Rory Wyley will lead a team of five into the eight-day international race supported by club mates Steve Howells and Sean Foley. An American duo comprising Gordon Konrad and Steve Lepine complete the team who have all ridden the event previously.

Rory Wyley was a relative latecomer to the sport from athletics but has already shown his prowess with 2nd place in last year’s Tour of the Border, 12th in the Irish national championships and 10th overall in the Surrey League 5-day. The 35-year-old Waterfordman has already started this season well with second place in the Severn Bridge road race in the UK. He resumes his participation in the Premier Calendar series this season starting with the Archer GP at the end of March, which is a stones throw from his home in Maidenhead.

Steve Howells has always been consistent against the clock and in the bunch. He has now fully recovered from a serious race injury after being caught in a serious crash in a UK race at the end of last year. Sean Foley is a new member whose previous clubs include the Navan RC before his move to England.

The club was originally formed in 1997 and continues to be sponsored by civil engineers J Browne Construction and the veterinarycentre.com, both based in North-West London. With the club administration in safe hands Steve Howells will now be able to focus on racing and London Irish gain a number of high calibre riders and the prospect of attracting new people to the 22-strong membership.

“It’s fantastic that we will now have riders from the Elite ranks riding for us,” said General Secretary Gerry McManus: “The Sdeals.com club was set up to support Steve Howells on-line cycle shop and although the club was relatively small, they were consistently on the result sheets. I expect some club time-trial records to be broken this year.”

The club has a web site at www.londonirish.freeserve.co.uk
