Tour of Ulster  Dates: 5th - 7th May 2001

The 2001 Tour of Ulster 

Latest Update: TOUR OF ULSTER GOES AHEAD (By Jim Trainor Apr 25)

The UCPC met last Sunday and decided that the TOUR OF ULSTER would definitely go ahead, even if it necessitated making last minute changes, but all difficulties have now been resolved and it starts from Newry Sports Centre Saturday May 5 at noon.

Stage one (60m.) travels via Mayobridge to Hilltown with a KOH at the Seven Sisters. There is a 1st cat. KOH at the Spelga Pass and the race then goes via Bryansford, Dundrum, Minerstown with a KOH primes at Killough and Ardglass. The finish is at the Down County Museum Gates in Downpatrick at approximately 2.20 p.m.

Stage two (79m.) departs Downpatrick Leisure Centre at noon. Route: Clough, Castlewellan (KOH), Rathfriland (KOH), Newry (Courthouse), Crankey (KOH), Markethill, Deadmans Hill (KOH), Newtownhamilton, Fews Forest (KOH), Armagh, Portadown, Lurgan, finish at Silverwood Hotel, Kiln Road approx. 3 p.m..

Stage 3a: 3m. TT Silverwood Hotel, first rider 9.01.

Stage 3b 62m. departs Silverwood Hotel 12.55. Route: Craigavon Centre, Portadown, Armagh, Keady, Keady Mountain (KOH), Newtownhamilton, Fews Forest (KOH), Markethill, Tandragee, Scarva, Loughbrickland (KOH), Newry, finish at Belgrave Court, Belfast Road, Newry 3.25 approx.

(Mar 26) At a meeting of the UCPC on Sunday 25th March it was agreed that, if the situation doesn't worsen, the Tour of Ulster will go ahead as planned.

on 5, 6 & 7 May, Bank Holiday weekend will be taking place in South Down, Armagh & Monaghan, visiting Downpatrick and Newry then onto Monaghan. Open to Senior 1 and Senior 2 riders.

ROUTE CHANGES: There has been a change to the route of the second and third stages of the Tour of Ulster (May 5/7).

Because of restrictions due to Foot and Mouth, the second stage from Downpatrick will not finish in Monaghan town and the finish has been changed to Lurgan.

The final stage will now be from Lurgan to Newry. Much of the original route will be maintained and stage distances will also be similar to the original schedule.

  • Day One: (60.5m.)Starting in Newry, Co. Down on Saturday morning at 12 noon. Racing through Mayobridge, Hilltown, Kilkeel, Bryansford, Newcastle, Clough, Killough, Ardglass, Strangford and on to the stage finish expected in Downpatrick mid afternoon with an overnight halt in the historical town. K.O.H. - Seven Sisters Cat 3, Spelga Cat 1, Killough Cat 3, Ardglass Cat 3.

  • Day Two: (89m.) Starting in Downpatrick the race makes its way to Monaghan just over the border. Passing through Clough, Castlewellan, Kilcoo, Rathfriland, Newry, Markethill, Armagh, Newtownhamilton, Keady, Middletown and arriving in Monaghan. The race then joins a 4.5 miles circuit used for the final stage last year for 4 laps. K.O.H. - Castlewellan Cat 1, Rathfriland Cat 1, Crankey Cat 1, Deadmans Hill Cat 1, Fews Forest Cat 2.

  • Day Three: Monday sees a 9:00am start with a 7.5 miles Time Trial just outside Monaghan town centre starting and finishing at Monaghan Credit Union, riders off at 1 minute intervals.   The afternoon sees a 60m. stage race from Monaghan (1 p.m.) back to Newry travelling through Middletown, Keady, Armagh, Markethill, Tandragee, Scarva, Loughbrickland to Newry. K.O.H. - Keady Mtn. Cat 1, Few Forest Cat 2, Hilltop Cat 1, Loughbrickland Cat 3.
